Do you use plastic cutting boards at home? Throw them away, right now! Many households use plastic chopping boards instead of wooden ones, and this is a big reason for concern. According to a recent study published in Environmental Science & Technology, plastic cutting board users could be exposed to millions of plastic particles due to repeated usage. Read on to know more!

Why you should stop using plastic cutting boards

According to research, using plastic chopping boards releases microplastics which are a known health hazard. They have been linked to cancer, digestive issues, and reproductive issues. Some chemists even believe that we consume as much as a credit card’s worth of plastic every week.

Even if people are consuming water from plastic bottles, having food from plastic packaging and even consuming meat, they are ingesting micro amounts of microplastics.

What are the alternatives?

Instead of using plastic chopping boards, switch to using a wooden one. Wooden chopping boards are more durable and easily available at markets. While they are naturally antimicrobial and aesthetically pleasing, if not cleaned properly, they can harbour many bacterias.

Make sure to invest in two cutting boards if you consume meat. One can be use for meat chopping and the other for fruits and vegetables.

You should also switch to using a stainless steel reusable water bottle to reduce microplastic consumption. Make sure to avoid using plastic containers to store food. You can use ceramic or steel vessels instead.
