Study suggests processed meat may increase risk of cancer

A recent study conducted by Queen's University Belfast found that processed meat contains nitrites, which may increase the risk of developing tumours. Nitrites are widely used in processed meat to extend their shelf-life.

For the analysis, researchers fed mice processed meat containing nitrites and the other group of mice were given meat without chemicals.

Published in the journal Nature, the findings stated that mice who ate nitrite-packed food developed a 75 per cent increase in tumour, while the other group showed no symptoms.

The team also concluded that consuming processed food even in smaller quantities can raise the risk of cancer.
