Samantha Ruth Prabhu tries hydrogen peroxide nebulization: How safe is this method according to experts?

Samantha Ruth Prabhu recently took to Instagram and revealed to her fans that she has been trying out an alternate approach to taking medicines: Hydrogen Peroxide Nebulisation. The diva took to Instagram and shared that she has been taking a viral medication with the help of a nebuliser. Let us know in detail what is Hydrogen Peroxide Nebulisation!

What is Hydrogen Peroxide Nebulisation?

Samantha Prabhu took to the gram and shared a picture of herself taking nebulisation and wrote, “Before taking medication for a common viral, consider trying an alternative approach. One option is to nebulise with a mixture of Hydrogen peroxide and distilled water. Works like magic. Avoid unnecessary use of pills."

However, according to an expert, this method is not very safe.

In an interview with HT, Dr Rituja Ugalmugle, Internal Medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, revealed that Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and distilled water nebulization come with potential risks. She revealed that hydrogen peroxide is generally not recommended for nebulization due to its potential to cause oxidative stress, mucosal irritation, and other serious respiratory issues.

While distilled water is safer than hydrogen peroxide, it can still pose risks if used inappropriately. Normal saline remains the preferred choice for nebulization due to its safety profile and compatibility with the body’s electrolyte balance.

Safety concerns with Hydrogen Peroxide Nebulisation

Oxidative Stress

Inhaling hydrogen peroxide, which is a strong oxidising agent can cause oxidative stress and damage to lung tissues.

Can Cause Throat Irritation

Inhaling hydrogen peroxide can irritate the mucosal lining of the respiratory tract which can lead to coughing and throat irritation.

Cytotoxicity

Hydrogen peroxide can be cytotoxic to epithelial cells in the respiratory tract, potentially leading to cell death and tissue damage.

Chemical Burns

If you are not careful, high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide can cause chemical burns to the respiratory tract. This may lead to severe damage and complications.

Increases Risk Of Infection

Using non-sterile solutions or improper handling can introduce pathogens and can lead to infections.
