According to a new study, listening to music that holds a special meaning for you, on repeat, induces brain plasticity in patients with mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer’s disease. The study was published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

For the study, researchers examined 14 participants who listened to a playlist of their favourite songs. These individuals listened to music for one hour a day for three weeks. The group also underwent MRI scans before and after the experiment to measure changes in brain function and brain structure.

The team found noticeable changes in the brain’s control centre for deep thinking tasks. Listening to music that is meaningful to you personally stimulates neural connectivity and boosts brain plasticity in people who are at an early stage of cognitive decline, researchers concluded.
