International Women’s Day Special: Here’s why sleep is an important women's health issue

Women are more likely than men to have insomnia and greater problems initiating and sustaining sleep.

International Women’s Day Special: Here’s why sleep is an important women's health issue

Good sleep is an essential part of an individual’s life. Sound sleep means physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. An average adult requires seven to nine hours of sleep at night.

However, studies indicate that less than two-thirds of women actually get this much sleep on a daily basis. It is mostly because women are juggling multiple roles at one point. From working in the office to being a primary caregiver, women have to don many hats. In the process of taking care of others, they forget to prioritise themselves, which eventually leads to stress and poor sleep.

Research has shown that women face more difficulty sleeping, compared to men. They are also at a greater risk of being diagnosed
with insomnia. While being physically drained due to the everyday tasks, there is additional emotional stress among women that comes with being primary caregivers.

Lack of rest and stress causes sleep deprivation, which causes irritability, mood swings and a dip in happiness. It can also result in serious diseases such as hypertension, diabetes or heart disease.

There are ways that women can manage stress. For instance, women can practice self-care strategies such as exercising, yoga, following a healthy diet and getting enough amount of sleep. Apart from following these practices, practising sleep hygiene can also make a huge difference.

However, sometimes, none of this may work as well. If you are using a mattress that doesn’t suit your body type, there’s a higher chance that it is the reason you are not getting the sound sleep that you need. The right mattress is extremely important as it makes you feel rejuvenated the next day. Ensuring the right amount of sleep, on a mattress suited for your needs is, therefore, a prerogative for a refreshed, stress-free and happy mind!
