You can't deny how often we get tempted by roadside eateries. But before grabbing your favorite snack you need to know this.

A recent study carried out by Observer Research Foundation (ORF), Koan Advisory Group and Neste, revealed that the used cooking oil (UCO) raises the risk of contracting non-communicable diseases like cancer, organ damage and heart disease.

The study was a result of a survey done on 505 (101 large-sized and 406 small-sized) food business operators including street vendors and small shops across Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and New Delhi.

Even though in India, consumption of UCO in any form is strictly prohibited under food safety guidelines; researchers have found that the re-use of UCO by commercial food business operators is prevalent, especially among small vendors.

It's also very common to reuse cooking oil for household purposes. Around 60% of used oil is reused in India that flows back into the food stream causing health risks.

So, next time when deep-fried samosas, jalebis, and pakoras make you drool, think twice.
