Food prepared in coconut oil may spike cholesterol levels, according to a cardiologist

Several vegan foods (plant-based and processed) prepared in coconut oil may raise cholesterol levels, according to a cardiologist.

Coconut oil is often used as a substitute when it comes to preparing vegan foods. But it's a misconception that it is a healthier alternative to butter or other seed oils since it contains more saturated fat.

According to Dr. Harmony Reynolds, a cardiologist at NYU Langone, coconut oil can raise your levels of LDL cholesterol which is linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Vegan foods that are prepared in coconut oil include cookies, pastries, dairy-free versions of cheese, ice cream, and even plant-based meals such as burrito bowls.

As per American Heart Association guidelines, one should reduce their saturated fat intake to less than 6 per cent. Research also suggests that olive oil is a healthier choice as it helps reduce the risk of heart disease.
