Do you ‘hurkle-durkle’ in sleep? If not, know why this habit is beneficial for health

Published in the Journal of Sleep Research, a study discovered that people who snooze their alarm regularly get extra sleep and gain better cognitive alertness after waking up.

Do you ‘hurkle-durkle’ in sleep? If not, know why this habit is beneficial for health

How many of you love lurking under your blanket and lying there for hours even after the alarm has rung and you know it’s time to get on with the day?

Yes, we all have been there and are guilty as charged. This typical habit is called ‘hurkle-durkle’ and many of us do it almost every day in bed especially during the colder months. Don’t we?

How is hurky durky beneficial for health?

Earlier research has indicated that adopting relaxed mornings could significantly benefit overall well-being. According to a study published in the journal Sleep Health in December 2023, indulging in extra sleep on weekends might have long-term life-saving implications. The study's findings revealed that obtaining an additional two hours of sleep during the weekend could potentially decrease the risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke by 63%, particularly among individuals who sleep less than six hours per night on weekdays.

How is hurky durky different from bed rotting?

Bed rotting is a similar trend which gained attention in the recent past. This trend is about lying and relaxing in bed for long hours and that precisely is bed rotting. However, bed rotting can be done any time of the day and hurkle-durkle is restricted only to the morning hours during the time you wake up.

‘Hurky durky’ is a Caledonian colloquialism

Caledonian colloquialisms refer to words, phrases, or expressions that are characteristic of or commonly used in Scotland. "Caledonian" is an adjective related to Scotland, derived from "Caledonia," an ancient Roman name for Scotland. Colloquialisms are informal words or phrases used in everyday conversation rather than formal language. So, Caledonian colloquialisms are informal expressions unique to Scottish English or Scottish dialects. These may include slang terms, regional dialect words, or idiomatic expressions specific to Scotland. Examples might include "wee" (small), "braw" (good or fine), "wean" (child), or "dreich" (dull or gloomy weather).

Hurky durky video on TikTok got viral

A viral video on TikTok explaining this sleeping habit from Scotland has received about 4 million views and is gaining immense popularity on other social media platforms too.
