Dandruff: Experts share tips and tricks that can help combat itchy scalp

Dandruff and itchy scalp is a problem many of us deal with. There are times when using anti dandruff shampoos and other products also do not help in getting rid of the problem.

Recently Alexia Donovan, director of client services at the Barber Surgeons Guild, a hair restoration and grooming lounge with locations in New York City and Los Angeles said that shampooing is not the only solution.

“While winter months can cause dry scalp, the phrase ‘summer dandruff’ exists as sweat, dirt, humidity, pool chemicals and sun exposure can also trigger flakes,” she said.

Here are the tips and tricks shared by experts:

Brushing your hair and scalp every day is recommended to minimise oil and dead skin building up in your head between consecutive hair washes.

If you are exposed to the sun a lot on regular basis, covering your head with a hat or scarf is a good idea to prevent sunburn on the scalp.

Heavy usage of heating tools and products like curling iron or dryers can also exacerbate dandruff.

Experts suggest using mild and medicated shampoos to treat dandruff which contain yeast-fighting ingredients, such as ketoconazole, zinc, tar or salicylic acid.

See a dermatologist if the problem persists and is chronic and not improving.
