Conjunctivitis: The rising cases of eye infections in India raise concerns; experts advise precautions

Cases of conjunctivitis and various eye infections are increasing in India. Medical professionals recommend prioritising hygiene and seeking medical advice before resorting to self-medication for these conditions.

Recently, Dr Souradipta Chandra, a consultant physician, Internal Medicine, Helvetia Medical and Diagnostic Centre, suggested the following measures during an interview to news agency ANI.

According to him, it is essential to steer clear of self-medication in case of eye infection. If a person with typhoid begins taking antibiotics that are ineffective against the disease, the body may develop resistance to these drugs.

Chandra also noted that if someone's conjunctivitis stems from a viral origin and they initiate the use of eye drops containing steroids, they unintentionally increase the potential for prolonging the infection's duration.

Experts also suggest that conjunctivitis patients should isolate themselves from others, minimise the use of screens, wash their hands frequently, avoid touching their eyes, and should seek immediate help.
