Alarming bacteria levels found on Apple Watch and Fitbit wristbands, reveals study

A recent study published in the science journal Advances in Infectious Diseases has raised concerns about the cleanliness of Apple Watches and Fitbits.

Scientists from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) conducted tests on different types of wristbands, including plastic, rubber, cloth, leather, and metal (gold and silver).

The study discovered that around 95% of wristbands have harmful bacteria on them. Wristbands made of rubber and plastic have more bacteria because their textures are rough and porous, making it easier for bacteria to stick. On the other hand, wristbands made of gold, silver, and metal had very little or no bacteria.

Many people wear smartwatches daily to track their sleep, workouts, and overall health or to get reminders to move. However, these bacteria on the wristbands can cause various illnesses like pneumonia and infections in the blood.

The study also suggested that using disinfectant spray and 70 per cent ethanol can kill all the bacteria within 30 seconds.
