Princess Diana's dress breaks records; sells in 11 times more than the estimated price

Julien's Auctions has revealed the sale of a ballerina-length evening gown worn by Princess Diana in Florence, Italy, in April 1985, and later to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986. The dress, designed by Moroccan-British fashion creator Jacques Azagury, fetched an impressive $1,148,080 at auction, surpassing its initial estimate of $100,000 by 11 times. The buyer is still unknown.

Breaks record established earlier

This auction has set a new world record for the highest-priced dress worn by Princess Diana to be sold, surpassing the previous record established earlier this year with the sale of her purple evening gown by designer Victor Edelstein, which fetched $604,800.

"The entire collection holds great sentimental value for me, and the sole reason for putting them up for sale is that I officially retired five weeks ago," Azagury shared with PEOPLE. "My intention is for people to continue relishing these iconic dresses, and ideally, to maintain the collection as a whole."

The designer added, "With a perpetual enthusiasm for fashion, she anticipated bringing joy to numerous eager individuals awaiting her appearance in the next outfit—be it those on the streets or those watching her on television. She invested considerable time ensuring every detail was perfect, meticulously selecting the right shoes and jewellery."
