21-Year-Old Woman Booked for Abetting Man’s Suicide via WhatsApp Chat

Thane, Jul 2 (PTI): A 21-year-old woman has been booked by the police for allegedly abetting the suicide of a young man following a discovery of WhatsApp chats where she purportedly urged him to take his own life, informed officials on Wednesday.

The deceased, Sahil Sahdev Thakur, also 21, was discovered hanging in his home located in Varchapada area, Sagav in Dombivli (East) on June 26, according to an official from Manpada police station.

The victim and the alleged abettor shared an acquaintance.

On the fateful day, Thakur was home alone as his parents were away on a religious pilgrimage.

Upon their return, the parents discovered him hanging and promptly informed the police, the official stated.

Initially, the cause behind Thakur’s suicide was shrouded in mystery.

However, his family later examined his mobile phone and stumbled upon a series of WhatsApp chats with a woman identified as "Babli," whose contact was saved in his device.

A political party’s former office-bearer accompanied Thakur's family to the Manpada police station on Monday, presenting the chat records which allegedly contained troubling exchanges between Thakur and the woman from Pade village, leading up to the suicide, stated the official.

The police revealed that between 2 am and 3.15 am on the night preceding his demise, Thakur and the accused had engaged in a verbal altercation over the phone.

Within these messages, the woman allegedly advised him: "There is no one at home, hang yourself. Don't use a new saree, use an old one," as per the official.

Senior Police Inspector Sandipan Shinde affirmed that the message contents were scrutinized and deemed serious.

“Based on the digital evidence presented and the family’s formal complaint, a case was registered against the woman on Monday under section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” the official mentioned.

A thorough investigation is underway to examine all facets of the communication and the nature of the relationship between the deceased and the accused, the police informed.
