What will happen to old Parliament building now that legislature shifts to new?

The old Parliament building will not witness proceedings anymore as the legislature is being shifted to the new building. However, the old structure will not be demolished.

It will now be called 'Samvidhan Sadan' or 'Constitution House'.

According to reports, the 96-year-old building, designed by British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, will be retrofitted to provide more functional spaces for parliamentary events.

"The historic structure will be conserved, as it is an archaeological asset of the country," NDTV quoted sources as saying.

A part of the old Parliament will reportedly be converted into a museum.

In 2021, the then Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had told the Rajya Sabha that the old structure would have to be repaired and made available for alternative use.

The old Parliament building has witnessed many historic events, including the adoption of the Constitution of India.
