Kolkata, Jul 2 (PTI) Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya has been officially appointed as the new president of the West Bengal unit of the BJP, set to steer the party into the 2026 assembly elections.

At 61, Bhattacharya was elected unopposed, having been the only candidate to file a nomination before the deadline on Wednesday afternoon.

The official announcement was made at a felicitation ceremony held at Science City, with the presence of senior BJP leader and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who presented Bhattacharya with the certificate of election.

Prasad served as the national returning officer for the election of the West Bengal BJP president.

"Only one nomination was submitted for the post of president of West Bengal, and that is Samik Bhattacharya's. I congratulate him," Prasad said, handing over the certificate.

Bhattacharya submitted his nomination at the BJP's state headquarters in Salt Lake on Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by the outgoing president Sukanta Majumdar and the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.

Bhattacharya now steps into this leadership role at a pivotal time, with the West Bengal assembly elections less than a year away.
