Warning Issued Against Revealing Rape Victim's Identity in Kolkata

Kolkata, Jul 1 (PTI) The Kolkata Police have issued a stern warning on Tuesday against revealing the identity of a student allegedly gang-raped in a law college in the city. The police emphasized the gravity of revealing a rape victim’s identity, labeling it a serious legal violation.

"Certain individuals have been attempting to disclose the victim's identity in the Kasba case through the distribution of confidential documents or other means. This constitutes a serious legal breach," the advisory warned.

The advisory cautioned the public against sharing any documents, images, or social media content that could directly or indirectly reveal the victim's identity, noting it is punishable under relevant laws. The police declared that strict legal action would ensue against anyone indulging in such acts. Public members have been strongly advised to avoid sharing any information potentially leading to the identification of the victim.

Kolkata Police underscored that protecting a rape victim's identity is not only a legal mandate but also an ethical obligation. “Respecting victims’ dignity and privacy is both a legal obligation and an ethical responsibility,” the statement highlighted.

Meanwhile, a police officer reported that the DNA samples of the three accused in the alleged gang rape of the law college student were collected on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation. The arrested suspects, Monojit Mishra, Pratim Mukherjee, and Zaid Ahmed, were transported to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where their body fluid, urine, and hair samples were taken for forensic examination.

This incident has reignited memories of the previous year's case involving the rape-murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the victim's identity was revealed multiple times.
