Increasing Water Levels Boost Prospects for Erode Dam

Erode (Tamil Nadu), June 25 (PTI): The Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) Reservoir in Erode district is witnessing a steady increase in water levels, courtesy of the rains in its catchment areas, as per updates from the Water Resource Department on Wednesday.

Officials reported that over the past few days, the water storage in the Bhavanisagar dam, constructed across the Bhavani River, has been improving significantly. The inflow into the dam was recorded at an impressive 4,966 cusecs (cubic feet per second) at 8 AM on Wednesday. At the same time, the water level stood at 90.39 feet, compared to the full reservoir capacity of 105 feet. According to their assessment, the dam currently holds an estimated storage of 21.84 Thousand Million Cubic Feet (TMC feet) against its maximum limit of 32.8 TMC feet.

The officials noted that 1,355 cusecs of water are being released for irrigation through the LBP canal, Thadappalli, Arakkankottai, and Kalingarayan canals.

The dam serves as a crucial resource for farmers in Erode district and parts of Karur and Tiruppur districts, irrigating around 2.50 lakh acres of agricultural land annually. Furthermore, it supplies drinking water to Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam taluks, and part of Bhavani taluk in Erode district. With continued healthy inflow into the reservoir, farmers are optimistic about receiving an adequate supply of water for their irrigation needs this year.
