Watch: canal in Gujarat disintegrates day after inauguration; Congress, AAP slam BJP as elections loom

Merely a day after it was inaugurated, a portion of Narmada canal collapsed on 7 July leading to political attacks on the BJP govt in Gujarat, with just months to go for state elections.

The canal named Kutch Branch Canal (KBC) was inaugrated on 6 July. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had tweeted a video of people cheering when the water of Narmada reached Modkuba and Bhujpur Canal in Kutch.

After the cave-in, Opposition parties Congress and Aam Aadmi Party were quick to criticise the BJP.

Congress described the collapse as a display of the "corrupt Gujarat model of governance".

The Aam Aadmi Party on the other hand shared the video of the collapsed portion and wrote that the BJP's 'Vikas' model broke down within 24 hours.

A day earlier, while sharing visuals of the newly-inaugurated canal, CM Patel wrote on Twitter that it was a dream project of PM Narendra Modi, and his efforts and inspiration had made it possible.

Notably, the construction and opening of canal has long been opposed by environmental activists.

Gujarat is set to go the elections later this year.
