Vikram Misri: India's diplomatic maestro unveiled

Foreign secretary since July 2024

Vikram Misri assumed the role of India's 35th Foreign Secretary on July 15, 2024, bringing decades of diplomatic experience to the nation's top foreign policy position.

Deputy national security advisor (2022–2024)

Before becoming Foreign Secretary, Misri served as Deputy National Security Advisor, contributing to India's strategic and security policymaking under NSA Ajit Doval.

Ambassador to China during tense times

As ambassador to China from 2019 to 2021, Misri played a pivotal role in managing India-China relations during the Galwan Valley clashes and subsequent diplomatic engagements.

Served as private secretary to three PMs

Misri uniquely served as private secretary to Prime Ministers Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi, reflecting deep trust across political lines.

Key figure in India-China border pact

Before joining the Indian Foreign Service in 1989, Misri worked in advertising with Lintas India and Contract Advertising, gaining valuable communication skills.

Born in Srinagar, educated across India

Born on November 7, 1964, in Srinagar, Misri received his early education in Srinagar, Udhampur, and Gwalior, reflecting a diverse Indian upbringing.

Multilingual and internationally recognized bureaucrat

Fluent in English, Hindi, and Kashmiri, with working knowledge of French, Misri is also a fellow of the Aspen Institute's India Leadership Initiative.
