Vantara Cooperates with SIT in Animal Acquisition Probe Ordered by Supreme Court

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) - Reliance Foundation's zoological rescue and rehabilitation center, Vantara, has announced its intention to fully cooperate with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Supreme Court. The SIT is tasked with investigating allegations related to potential non-compliance with laws and the acquisition of animals both domestically and internationally.

On Monday, a bench comprising Justices Pankaj Mithal and P B Varale established the four-member SIT, with former Supreme Court Justice J Chelameswar leading the inquiry into the Jamnagar-based Vantara. This action follows two Public Interest Litigations (PILs) that cited reports from media outlets and social media, along with complaints from NGOs and wildlife organizations, raising concerns about alleged irregularities at Vantara, especially regarding the acquisition of elephants.

In a statement, Vantara expressed its respect for the Supreme Court's order and reiterated its commitment to transparency, compassion, and adherence to legal regulations. "Our mission and focus continue to be the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of animals. We will extend full cooperation to the Special Investigation Team and continue our work sincerely, always placing the welfare of animals at the heart of all our efforts," the statement noted.

Vantara also called for the investigation process to proceed without speculation, emphasizing the importance of acting in the best interest of the animals they serve. Importantly, the Supreme Court clarified that its order does not express any opinion on the allegations in the PILs nor does it imply any doubts about the functioning of the statutory authorities or Vantara.

The SIT's mandate includes examining and reporting on the procedures regarding animal acquisition from both India and abroad, particularly elephants. It will also assess compliance with the Wildlife (Protection) Act, zoo regulations, the international CITES agreement, and other laws related to the import and export of live animals.
