Uttarakhand's Green Energy Project Receives Clearance

Dehradun, May 26 (PTI) The Central Government's Forest Advisory Committee has granted in-principle approval for the transfer of nearly 30 hectares of forest land for a proposed 120 MW hydroelectric project on the Gauriganga river in Uttarakhand.

The Sirkari Bhyol Rupasiyabagh Hydroelectric Project is anticipated to generate approximately 529 million units of green energy annually, significantly contributing to Uttarakhand's power needs and aiding the state's journey towards energy self-reliance, according to a government release.

The approval was provided during a meeting at Indira Paryavaran Bhawan in Delhi.

The project's design emphasizes environmental sensitivity, with minimal surface impact as most structures, including a 1-km-long tunnel, are underground. The statement highlighted that the project area does not encompass any national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, or eco-sensitive zones, and will not lead to displacement.

Additionally, the project is expected to benefit locals through job creation and infrastructure development.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had previously sought approval from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav for the project.

Upon receiving in-principle approval, Dhami remarked on the project's potential as a historic development step for Uttarakhand's border regions.

"Under the Prime Minister's guidance, our state has seen remarkable advancements in energy and employment sectors. The government remains fully committed to public welfare. This project will lay the groundwork for Uttarakhand's prosperous future," Dhami stated.
