Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Ghana’s highest civilian honour — the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — during his official visit to the country.

The award was presented by President John Mahama on Wednesday (local time), marking a historic moment as it was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over three decades.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took to social media to express his pride at the global recognition.

He wrote on X, “Another proud moment for India! PM @narendramodi has been honoured with Ghana's highest civilian award -- 'The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana.' This recognition celebrates his global statesmanship and India's growing influence under his visionary leadership.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also applauded the honour and linked it to India’s growing global presence, especially in representing the Global South. “Fitting that PM @narendramodi has been conferred with Ghana's national honour - the 'Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana'. It is a recognition of his steadfast efforts in strengthening the voice of the Global South. Also a testament to our cooperation and friendship with Ghana,” he posted on X.

Accepting the award, Prime Minister Modi called it a moment of great personal and national pride. “It is a matter of great pride and honour for me to be conferred with Ghana's national award, The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, by the President. I express my heartfelt gratitude to President Mahama ji, the Government of Ghana and the people of Ghana. I humbly accept this honour on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians,” he said.

He also dedicated the award to the youth and the shared values between India and Ghana. “I dedicate this award to the aspirations of our youth, their bright future, our rich cultural diversity and traditions and the historic ties between India and Ghana,” PM Modi stated.

During the visit, PM Modi and President Mahama held bilateral talks and agreed to take the India-Ghana relationship to the level of a “Comprehensive Partnership,” paving the way for enhanced cooperation in various sectors.
