'Unwarranted': India objects to US remarks on Kejriwal's arrest

The Ministry of External Affairs summoned US Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbena over the State Department's remarks on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest.

"We take strong objection to the remarks of the Spokesperson of the US State Department about certain legal proceedings in India. In diplomacy, states are expected to be respectful of the sovereignty and internal affairs of others. This responsibility is even more so in case of fellow democracies. It could otherwise end up setting unhealthy precedents. India’s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary which is committed to objective and timely outcomes. A day after Kejriwal's arrest, the US State Department had said it was monitoring the situation, and called on the Indian government to ensure "a fair, transparent, and timely legal process" for the jailed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader.

Earlier, the foreign ministry had summoned the German envoy over the nation's remarks on Kejriwal's arrest, calling it a "blatant interference" in internal matters.
