Shri Ram Swaroop University Faces Charges of Cheating and Forgery

Lucknow, Sep 3 (PTI): Shri Ram Swaroop Memorial University in Barabanki has come under scrutiny after being booked on accusations of cheating and forgery for allegedly offering an unrecognised law course over the past three years, according to an official statement. An FIR was lodged on Wednesday at the Barabanki city police station, prompted by a complaint from the Uttar Pradesh Higher Education Commission. This body oversees compliance under the Uttar Pradesh Private Universities Act, 2019.

Dinesh Kumar, Additional Secretary of the Commission, filed the complaint. He alleged that the university enrolled students in its law programme for the academic sessions 2023-24 and 2024-25, and even conducted examinations without securing approval from the appropriate authority. Registrations for the 2025-26 session were reportedly in progress as well. The FIR cites violations under Sections 318 (4) (cheating), 338 (forgery of a valuable security), 336 (3) (forgery), and 340 (using forged documents or electronic records as genuine) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as mentioned by the official. The commission asserts that such actions compromise the future of students, breaching the Private Universities Act, 2019, and associated guidelines.

The FIR was filed following an inquiry report from the Ayodhya divisional commissioner. This came after a student protest, spearheaded by groups like the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), against the university on September 1. "Strict legal action has been advised against the university's administration," stated Dinesh Kumar in the complaint. During the protest, a number of students, including ABVP members, suffered injuries due to a police lathi charge, eliciting strong reactions from opposition parties as well as the BJP.
