The government has unveiled the UMEED portal, a transformative initiative aimed at digitizing and geo-tagging Waqf properties across the country. This landmark development was spearheaded by Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who hailed it as a significant stride towards ensuring that Waqf assets are utilized effectively and equitably to benefit economically disadvantaged Muslims. UMEED, which stands for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development, is more than just a modern technological platform. Serving as a centralized digital system, it allows for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties, ensuring transparency and accountability in their management. Minister Rijiju, alongside Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian, inaugurated this central portal, emphasizing its role in enhancing the management and administration of Waqf properties in India. Rijiju noted that this initiative is a testament to the government's dedication to protecting minority communities' rights and ensuring that Waqf resources serve their intended purpose of supporting impoverished Muslims, particularly focusing on women and children. In a social media message following the launch, Rijiju described the UMEED portal as a "momentous occasion," emphasizing its importance not just as a technological advancement, but as a symbol of the government's pledge to improve the welfare of minority communities by securing and optimizing the use of their communal assets.
