UK's special dress code for India meet: Trevelyan dons kurta for trade talks

An important meeting, and an interesting dress code. As top representatives of the Indian and UK governments met to discuss a free trade agreement, the choice of attire of the English side attracted notice.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan, UK Secretary of State for International Trade chose to wear a traditional Indian dress - a kurta - for her meeting with Indian commerce & industry minister Piyush Goyal. The Indian minister was seen wearing a kurta as well.

Trevelyan is in India on a 2-day trip to discuss the removal of trade barriers, allowing easier market access to each other's producers.

India reportedly wants UK to ease its work and tourism visa rules for Indian citizens. Delhi is also reportedly looking for better market access for products ranging from vaccines to basmati rice.

Meanwhile, London reportedly wants India to remove tariffs on import of whisky, British-made cars, and other food & drink, and healthcare goods and services.

India is looking to sign free trade pacts with individual countries after walking out of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP, which is the largest trade deal in the world.
