U.S. to sell advanced F-35 Fighter Jets to India Expanding Defense Ties

In a significant announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that the United States is set to sell F-35 fighter jets to India, marking a major expansion in bilateral defense ties.

This move will see India joining an elite group of nations, which includes NATO allies, Israel, and Japan, which have access to the state-of-the-art stealth aircraft.

Speaking at a joint news conference alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Trump stated, "Starting this year, we'll be increasing military sales to India by many billions of dollars. We're also paving the way to ultimately provide India with the F-35 stealth fighters."

The F-35 Lightning II, developed by Lockheed Martin, is heralded as one of the world's most advanced and versatile fighter jets. The aircraft boasts advanced stealth technology, exceptional situational awareness, and networked combat capabilities, enabling it to operate undetected at supersonic speeds.

The F-35 is available in three variants: the F-35A, a conventional takeoff and landing model primarily used by the U.S.

Air Force; the F-35B, which supports short takeoff and vertical landing, utilized by the U.S. Marine Corps; and the F-35C, designed for aircraft carrier operations by the U.S. Navy.

These impressive jets were recently showcased at the 15th edition of Aero India, Asia's largest aerospace and defense exhibition, held at the Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bengaluru. The F-35 has also captured popular imagination through its appearances in various films and television shows, notably "Top Gun: Maverick" (2022).

Regarding costs, the F-35 program is among the most expensive military projects ever undertaken. Lockheed Martin estimates the total cost, which includes development, production, and maintenance, to exceed $1.7 trillion. The individual price tag for each jet is approximately $80 million for the F-35A, $115 million for the F-35B, and $110 million for the F-35C. Additionally, operational costs run high, with each flight hour estimated at around $36,000.

This strategic acquisition represents a significant step forward in India-U.S. defense cooperation, potentially enhancing India's defense capabilities aligned with modern technological advancements.
