Tripura Tackles Drug Trafficking Amidst Geographical Challenges

Agartala, Jun 25 (PTI): On Wednesday, Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed concerns over drug cartels exploiting Tripura's geographical positioning for smuggling and illicit trafficking.

The state, bordered by Bangladesh on three sides and sharing limited boundaries with Assam and Mizoram, is being used as a conduit for such illegal activities. Speaking on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Chief Minister highlighted the threat these cartels pose to the youth of Tripura.

Chief Minister Saha noted, "Our geographical location is being manipulated by these cartels for the smuggling of drugs, and unfortunately, they have targeted our young boys and girls."

In response, the state government has initiated several measures to combat this crisis. Plans are underway to establish drug de-addiction centers across all eight districts, with each facility costing approximately Rs 20 crore. Additionally, the DoNER ministry has sanctioned Rs 198 crore for a specialized center in Bishramganj, Sepahijala district.

The government is also formulating rules to oversee privately operated de-addiction centers. "Our zero-tolerance policy against drug addiction and trafficking is firm," Saha asserted, adding that law enforcement agencies are diligently addressing the problem.

Significant progress has been seen, with a 103% increase in drug seizures and a 132% rise in destruction of contraband compared to the previous year, indicating robust efforts by the authorities.

Moreover, the government is contemplating the introduction of sex education in school curriculums to raise awareness about the consequences of drug use among students, as reports suggest rising involvement in drug-related activities.

The event was a collaborative effort by the Narcotics Control Bureau and the West Tripura district administration.
