Trinamool Congress Condemns Gangrape, Advocates Justice

Kolkata, Jun 27 (PTI): The Trinamool Congress on Friday expressed strong condemnation over the alleged gangrape of a student at a law college in Kolkata, urging that the matter should remain free from political agendas.

During a press briefing, Shashi Panja, a West Bengal minister, communicated the state government's unwavering support for the student and her family in their time of need.

"This incident is deeply distressing. Kolkata Police has already commenced an investigation, with all related information accessible to the public," Panja stated.

She emphasized, "Rather than turning the victim into a political symbol, it is crucial to recognize her suffering, offer her respect, and ensure justice is delivered swiftly and without conditions."

Reports indicate that the law college student was allegedly raped on June 25 within the confines of the institution by an alumnus, with two senior students reportedly assisting the main perpetrator, according to police sources.

The three accused individuals have been apprehended and presented in court, which has ordered them into police custody for four days.

The prime accused's social media profiles indicate his previous roles as the former president of the college’s Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad unit, and as the organisational secretary for the TMC student body’s south Kolkata wing.

Panja highlighted West Bengal's unique stance as the sole state advocating for the passage of the ‘Aparajita Bill’, which proposes severe penalties for sexual offenders.

"Our goal is for this bill to be enacted into law, sending a powerful message as a deterrent," she stated.

In a subtle critique of the opposition, Panja noted, “Some figures choose to uplift or celebrate the accused. We do not participate in such acts or provide protection to such individuals. Under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, the government actively opposes shielding offenders or compromising women's dignity.”

The TMC further criticized the Centre’s “apathy” towards the 'Aparajita Bill', labeling it “profoundly regrettable.”

“Despite numerous appeals, the BJP-led central government has taken no initiative towards its implementation,” stated Panja.

The bill, which was proposed following the RG Kar hospital incident, seeks to amend and introduce new legal measures concerning rape and sexual offenses.

Earlier, the party expressed on X, “Under the guidance of Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt @MamataOfficial, the state administration is devoted to offering all possible support and help to the victim during this trying period. Justice will be realized.”
