Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and local residents staged a sit-in protest in Ahmedabad&rsquo;s Naroda area following the demolition of houses in Baliya Bapa ni Chali, party leaders said on Thursday.&nbsp;
The protest was held outside the office of Gujarat Urban Development Minister and local MLA Darshanaben Vaghela.
According to AAP, around 150 houses were demolished after notices were issued to residents. AAP State Vice President Gauri Desai, who participated in the protest along with affected families, said the residents were served notices on November 6 and demolition was carried out after what she described as a single notice.
Desai alleged that the demolition was conducted without making alternative accommodation arrangements for the affected families. She cited Supreme Court guidelines, which, she said, mandate that rehabilitation be provided before demolition. She claimed that no such arrangements were made in this case.
AAP leaders further said that residents had earlier approached the local Collector and submitted applications to MLA Darshanaben Vaghela seeking relief, but did not receive any response. On Thursday, affected residents reached the minister&rsquo;s office carrying copies of the notices they had received.
According to Desai, the residents were later informed that the minister was on tour and the office was closed, despite Thursdays and Fridays being designated public meeting days. She also questioned claims that 102 houses had been allotted to the affected families, alleging that officials did not provide a list when asked.
AAP leaders alleged that several women and children were present at the protest and that many were visibly distressed following the demolition. The party also claimed that people who had gathered to submit their grievances were asked to leave and that the office was subsequently closed.
Desai said the Aam Aadmi Party would continue to raise the issue and support the affected residents through peaceful means in the coming days.
No immediate response was available from the minister&rsquo;s office regarding the allegations at the time of filing this report.

As per the data cited by Sorathiya, AAP won 219 of the 343 district panchayat seats, while the Congress secured 56 seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won seven seats. In the taluka panchayat elections, results for 2,835 seats have been declared, with AAP winning 1,558 seats, Congress 610 seats and BJP 64 seats.
Sorathiya said the overall outcome indicates that AAP has won close to 70 per cent of the total seats across both tiers of local bodies. Referring to the upcoming local body elections in Gujarat, he expressed confidence that voters in the state would respond positively to AAP, positioning the party as an alternative in the state&rsquo;s political landscape.
He also stated that public sentiment in Gujarat is changing after three decades of BJP rule and that AAP is emerging as a credible option for voters seeking political change. A thick layer of fog stretching from Punjab to Bihar reduced visibility across the Indo-Gangetic plains on Friday morning, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for Delhi and warning that road, rail and air traffic may be affected.
IMD officials said satellite imagery showed a dense fog cover over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, northeast Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
At 5.30 am, visibility was recorded at zero metres in Agra, Bareilly, Saharanpur and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh; Ambala, Amritsar, Bathinda, Ludhiana and Adampur in Punjab; Safdarjung in Delhi; Ambala in Haryana; Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh; Bhagalpur in Bihar; and Daltonganj in Jharkhand.
The IMD issued a red alert for Delhi, warning that fog may disrupt operations at some airports and affect highways and railway routes.
An orange alert was issued for several districts in Uttar Pradesh, including Agra, Aligarh, Baghpat, Bareilly, Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Etah, Etawah, Firozabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Hathras, Mathura, Meerut, Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Pilibhit, Rampur, Saharanpur, Shahjahanpur and Shamli.
Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand and Amritsar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Gurdaspur, Patiala and Sangrur in Punjab are also under an orange alert.
The IMD warned of difficult driving conditions and an increased risk of road accidents, adding that there is a possibility of power line tripping in affected areas.
"Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions, including being careful while driving or travelling by any mode of transport, using fog lights, checking road and traffic conditions, staying in touch with airlines, railways and state transport authorities for travel schedules, avoiding unnecessary travel and following advisories issued by concerned agencies," the IMD said.
According to the weather office, 'very dense fog' is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, between 51 and 200 metres is 'dense', between 201 and 500 metres 'moderate', and between 501 and 1,000 metres 'shallow'.

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha deputy leader Sagarika Ghose accused the Union government of bulldozing the VB- G RAM G bill, as opposition MPs sat on a 12-hour dharna in the Parliament complex.
The Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Bill was passed by Parliament amid opposition's protests, with the Rajya Sabha giving it its nod post midnight.
Ghose said the manner in which the Modi government has brought in this completely "anti-poor, anti-people, anti-farmer, anti-rural poor" VBGRG bill, and has done away with the MGNREGA.
"This is an insult to India's poor, it is an insult to Mahatma Gandhi, it is an insult to Rabindranath Tagore. With just five hours' notice, this bill was given to us. We were not allowed a proper debate," Ghose said.
"Our demand was such an important bill should be sent to the Select Committee and let the opposition parties examine it, let the opposition parties discuss it, let all stakeholders discuss it, but no, in a display of tyranny, in a murder of democracy," she said.
"We are now going to sit on a 12-hour dharna, 12-hour dharna against the manner in which the Modi government has brought this black law against the people of India, against the poor of India, against the rural poor of India," she said.
Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala termed the day as a "sad day for the country's labour force and accused the Modi government as anti-farmer and anti-poor.
"This is perhaps the saddest day for the labourers of India. BJP government has attacked the livelihood of 12 crore people by repealing the MGNREGA. They have proved that the Modi government is anti-farmer and anti-poor," he alleged.
Congress leader Mukul Wasnik said, "When MGNREGA was drafted, consultations were held for 14 months. It was passed by Parliament with consensus. The scheme would put an extreme burden on states. As a result, this scheme will collapse."
DMK leader Tiruchi Siva said they shifted the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and Ambedkar to the back side of Parliament, where people cannot see.
"Likewise they have removed Mahatma Gandhi's name himself. Without Gandhi there is no freedom, that is the total belief in this country. Even in Britain parliament we are having Gandhi statue, but here in Indian parliament his statue is hidden somewhere, and now the scheme which bore his name, his name has also been removed," he claimed.
He said the entire opposition is agitated, he noted.

AAP&rsquo;s statement highlighted, "Complaints about the poor condition of roads continue to emerge not only during the monsoon but also on normal days. Across both cities and villages, roads are reportedly in a state of disrepair, leaving residents distressed."
Khava also cited the revenue collected through toll tax over the past five years. &ldquo;Over the last five years, the state government has collected a massive amount of ₹8,702 crore from the people of Gujarat in the name of toll tax. Instead of using this money to improve roads, the government has spent it on self-glorification. In some cases, despite collecting nearly double the amount compared to the actual cost of road construction, toll tax continues to be charged,&rdquo; he said.
He requested that the toll tax be reviewed and called on the state government to take measures to address road maintenance.

He also referred to the Punjab government&rsquo;s decision to provide compensation of ₹50,000 per hectare to farmers in cases of crop damage, stating that the amount was transferred directly to farmers&rsquo; bank accounts within one month. According to Rai, road and infrastructure development in Punjab has also seen visible improvements since AAP assumed office.
Commenting on upcoming local body elections in Gujarat, Rai expressed confidence that similar political momentum could emerge in the state. Elections are scheduled in the coming months for municipal corporations, municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats in Gujarat.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Chaitar Vasava on Wednesday visited Padaliya village in Gujarat&rsquo;s Banaskantha district to verify facts related to an incident involving forest officials, police personnel and members of the tribal community. He met local residents and affected families before addressing the media.
Speaking to reporters, Vasava said he had come to ascertain details of the incident that took place on the 13th, during which, according to him, forest officials and police carried out actions without prior notice. He alleged that a woman&rsquo;s house was demolished despite her having young children and claimed that around 10 am, a convoy arrived and filled in a well that villagers had been using as a drinking water source.
Vasava further stated that JCB machines dug pits and carried out plantation work on agricultural land where crops were standing. He said villagers questioned why permission from the Gram Sabha was not obtained despite the area falling under Schedule 5, and why no advance notice was issued.&nbsp;
According to him, several villagers were detained on the instructions of senior police officials, and when residents sought their release, police resorted to a lathi-charge.
He claimed that as a result, 32 to 35 people were seriously injured. Vasava also questioned who authorised the firing of 27 tear gas shells and more than 50 rounds. He said that following what he described as excessive force, villagers resorted to stone-pelting in self-defence, after which the situation turned violent. Vasava alleged that the incident involved senior government officers and ministers, and was not limited to lower-level officials.
The AAP MLA further alleged that only a one-sided FIR was registered, naming 27 individuals and mentioning an unnamed mob of 500 people. He demanded that FIRs also be filed against senior police officials and that cases registered against tribal residents be withdrawn.
Refuting claims made by the Superintendent of Police to the media that tribals attacked police with spears and bows, Vasava said no such weapons were in their possession. He stated that tribal communities believe in dialogue and the Constitution, and added that despite discussions lasting three hours, no resolution was reached, culminating in the lathi-charge.
Vasava said the affected families have been living in the area for generations and have filed claims under the Forest Rights Act, 2006, which, he said, should be approved and land titles issued. He alleged that the violence occurred at the behest of the BJP government&rsquo;s forest minister, with police acting on instructions from industrialists.
He warned that if the demands are not addressed and tribal residents continue to face harassment, people from Ambaji to Umargam would unite and march to government offices, including towards Gandhinagar. Vasava concluded by stating that if justice is not delivered, the Aam Aadmi Party will approach the Human Rights Commission, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, and, if necessary, the United Nations court.

The BJP on Wednesday accused the Congress of running misleading propaganda over the trial court's decision in the National Herald case and said the court refused to take cognisance of the complaint but did not set aside the case.
The case is still pending trial in the Delhi High Court, and the trial court in its order on Tuesday said that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) can continue its investigation, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia asserted.
"The court yesterday (Tuesday) said that since it is a private complaint and no FIR has been lodged, it will not take cognisance of it. It's a technical matter. The court also said that ED can continue its investigation further. The court did not set it aside," Bhatia told a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Delhi.

The BJP spokesperson also lashed out at the Congress over its leader Pawan Khera accusing the "gangs of Gandhinagar" of misusing central probe agencies, and demanded an apology from him and the opposition party president Mallikarjun Kharge for such remarks.
"Every Indian, especially those in Gandhinagar, is pained by his remarks. What kind of language is this? If we were to respond in their language, the people of India call them 'dacoits of Italy'. These people come to plunder India. Without becoming a citizen, they try to cast a vote and insult Gandhinagar's honest, hardworking and patriotic people," Bhatia said.
Hitting out at the government on Tuesday, Khera said that the trial court order exposed how the "gangs of Gandhinagar" are misusing the central ED, CBI, Income Tax department and Election Commission like a "private army."
"I won't use the word government. I won't use the word prime minister. I won't say home minister. Pardon me, I will say gangs of Gandhinagar," the Congress head of the media and publicity department had told the reporters.
Bhatia also dismissed the Congress's allegation of "political vendetta" and said the National Herald case against the Gandhis was born out of a private complaint, and neither the High Court nor the Supreme Court quashed the proceedings in the matter when Sonia and Rahul Gandhi approached the courts seeking relief.
The BJP spokesperson alleged that the Gandhi family is the "most corrupt family" in politics across the world and said, "They are out on bail but still accused in the case."
Bhatia said that if anybody feels that an investigation agency is acting contrary to the law and there is a case of political vendetta, they are free to move the High Court or the Supreme Court.
He said that 14 parties had earlier moved the Supreme Court alleging that central agencies were acting contrary to the law, however, the petition was dismissed by the top court.
But the Congress hailing the trial court's order shows its "double standards," he charged.
"Today they are appreciating the judiciary just like they felt about the Election Commission when the poll results in Telangana, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh came in their favour. When the poll results did not come in their favour in Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi, the Election Commission became bad for them," Bhatia said.
Such double standards show the Congress has become "hollow from inside", he said.
"Since the trial in the National Herald case is yet to be over, I hope the Congress and its leaders will express similar faith in the judiciary when accused persons in the case are sentenced to seven years of imprisonment, which is possible," Bhatia added.

Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra, co-owners of the &lsquo;Birch by Romeo Lane&rsquo; nightclub, were taken to Anjuna police station after their medical examination at the District Hospital in North Goa on Wednesday. The health check-up went on for more than an hour.
The siblings were brought to Goa from Delhi earlier in the day after being deported from Thailand in connection with the December 6 fire incident that killed 25 persons. They will be interrogated by the Goa Police in connection with the devastating fire at the nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, an official said.
A team of the Goa Police, along with the Luthra brothers, landed at the Manohar International Airport, Mopa, in North Goa at 10.45 am. The duo was initially taken to a Primary Health Centre at Siolim in North Goa for medical examination. They were later taken to the District Hospital at Mapusa in North Goa.
After their medical check-up, which took over an hour, the Luthra brothers were taken to the Anjuna police station, about 10 km from there. A convoy of six police jeeps accompanied them from the airport to the medical facility. According to eyewitnesses, the two brothers were made to sit in separate vehicles.
The accused will also be produced before a court in Mapusa town for their regular remand, an official said. After the fire tragedy, the Anjuna police had registered a case against the Luthra brothers on various charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The Luthra brothers were arrested on Tuesday as soon as they landed in Delhi after being deported from Thailand. A court there allowed the Goa Police their two-day transit remand.
The duo had fled to Phuket in Thailand early on December 7, hours after the fire at their nightclub, prompting the authorities to issue an Interpol Blue Corner Notice and cancel their passports. They were detained by Thai authorities at Phuket on December 11 following a request from the Indian government, which later coordinated with officials in Thailand to deport them under legal treaties between the two nations.
Five managers and staff members have already been arrested by the Goa Police in connection with the fire.

After being alerted, police, along with the bomb detection and disposal squad, dog squad and anti-sabotage teams, reached the schools and conducted a thorough search, Patel told reporters.&nbsp;
"In the email sent to the schools, it was claimed that bomb blasts will be carried out in these establishments during the afternoon. As a precautionary measure, these schools declared a holiday for the afternoon shift as the morning shift was already over," he said.&nbsp;
"Our teams reached the schools and conducted a thorough search. However, nothing suspicious was found. Cybercrime teams are now investigating the source of these emails and who was behind them," Patel said.&nbsp;
The exact contents of these emails are not disclosed because the matter is under investigation, he said.&nbsp;

Tipra Motha Party's youth wing on Friday staged a demonstration near the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala to protest an "anti-India campaign" and remarks made by a leader of the neighbouring country about the Northeast.
Security has been beefed up near the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in the wake of the protest staged by the Youth Tripra Federation (YTF).
"We want to remind anti-India forces in Bangladesh that it was India that liberated Bangladesh from the oppression of Pakistan Army... It took only 13 days to turn East Pakistan into a sovereign country," YTF president Suraj Debbarma told reporters.
The agitators also raised slogans against the present regime in Bangladesh.
Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, in an X post, said, "The only political party in Northeast to publicly protest outside the Bangladesh (Assistant) High Commission after statements were made against our Northeast is Tipra Motha and YTF. Wake up political rivals our real fight should be against the new mini Pakistan (Bangladesh), not each other."
During a rally in protest against the attack on prominent July Uprising leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who later succumbed to gunshot wounds, National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah had threatened to split the seven sisters of the Northeast from India and provide shelter to separatist leaders of the region.
West Tripura Superintendent of Police (SP) Namit Pathak said that Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and CRPF personnel have been deployed to provide security to Bangladesh Assistant High Commission.
"Adequate security arrangements have been made to handle the situation," he said.
The protest brought back memories of last year, when hundreds of agitators had barged into the assistant high commission and the Centre had to tender an apology for the security breach.
Tension gripped Bangladesh on Friday after the death of Hadi triggered protests and violence in various parts of the country.
Hadi, a candidate in the scheduled February 12 general elections, died while undergoing treatment at a Singapore hospital after fighting for his life for six days. He was shot in the head last week by masked gunmen as he initiated his election campaign at central Dhaka's Bijoynagar area.
Protesters on Thursday took to the streets and attacked offices of newspapers and vandalised 32 Dhanmandi, the home of Bangladesh's founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Protesters also hurled bricks and stones at the residence of the Indian Assistant High Commissioner in Chattogram, at 1.30 am, but failed to cause any damage.

AAP leaders, led by Isudan Gadhvi, conduct a review meeting in Navsari ahead of municipal elections, highlighting civic issues, BJP mismanagement, and promising corruption-free governance.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) conducted a review meeting in Navsari under the leadership of state president Isudan Gadhvi, ahead of the upcoming Navsari Municipal Corporation elections. Leaders and party workers, including AAP South Gujarat Zone President Ram Dhaduk, attended the meeting.
Speaking to the media before the session, Gadhvi highlighted key issues in the city and outlined the party&rsquo;s plans for the elections. &ldquo;The Navsari Municipal Corporation elections are approaching and a review will be conducted with party workers in this regard,&rdquo; he said.
Gadhvi criticised the current administration in Navsari, stating that long-standing governance challenges have affected public services. &ldquo;BJP has been ruling Navsari for years and people are suffering from various problems. BJP leaders do not know how to govern and all the money is going into corruption. The leaders are so arrogant that they believe people have no other option even if they do not vote for them. This arrogance is troubling the public today,&rdquo; he said.
He also raised concerns about urban infrastructure and civic services, adding, &ldquo;Even demolitions carried out have not been put to proper use. If in the city of Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil, water comes once every 45 days, one can imagine the situation. The point is that the development Navsari deserves has not taken place. Taxes are being imposed on the public. As per information received, taxes in Navsari are likely to be almost doubled after the elections. Navsari is facing many issues related to roads, water supply, sewerage and inflation. Women are not provided free bus travel.&rdquo;
Highlighting AAP&rsquo;s governance model in other states, Gadhvi urged residents to consider the party as an alternative. &ldquo;I appeal to the people of Navsari that a strong alternative is now emerging and an opportunity is coming. Till now, people may have suffered under the BJP system. When the Aam Aadmi Party formed the government in Delhi and provided 300 units of free electricity, BJP governments in other states were also forced to provide free electricity. If the people of Navsari form an AAP Municipal Corporation, they will not only get various facilities but also a corruption-free civic body. Public money will be properly utilized over five years. Facilities will be provided such as Gujarat has never seen before,&rdquo; he said.
Gadhvi cited the party&rsquo;s record in Punjab, stating, &ldquo;In three years, the AAP government in Punjab has done such good work that it won 87 percent of the seats in the local body elections. In Punjab, electricity and water have been made free, schools have been built, and 43,000 kilometers of good roads are being constructed. Punjab has been made drug-free and youth affected by addiction have been given jobs. 56,000 government jobs have been provided without a single rupee of bribery or any paper leak. The AAP government in Punjab has achieved what was considered impossible in three years, which is why people have given such a massive mandate.&rdquo;
He appealed to the people of Navsari to &ldquo;rise above greed, inducements, casteism and regionalism, and choose the politics of work.&rdquo; Gadhvi added that preparations for the election are underway and the candidate selection process is expected to begin within the next fifteen days.

Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha conclude 2025 Winter Session, passing crucial bills including MNREGA repeal and election reforms, with high member participation and Zero Hour activity.

The 269th session of the Rajya Sabha concluded on Friday, with Chairman and Vice-President of India CP Radhakrishnan delivering his valedictory address. The winter session, he noted, was particularly significant as it marked his first time presiding over the House.
&ldquo;I thank the Prime Minister, Ministers, J.P. Nadda, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, and all Members for their felicitations. Your encouragement is a source of great motivation,&rdquo; he said, expressing gratitude for the support he received during the session.
The Chairman acknowledged the cooperation of Members, highlighting their willingness to work late and skip lunch recess on five occasions to complete business. &ldquo;This session witnessed an unprecedented number of Zero Hour Notices, averaging over 84 per day, a 31% increase compared to previous sessions,&rdquo; he said, adding that matters raised during Zero Hour averaged more than 15 per day&mdash;nearly a 50% increase from earlier sessions.
&ldquo;We must keep up the good work, keeping in mind that the people of this great nation look up to us as custodians of democracy,&rdquo; Radhakrishnan added.
The session featured several high-profile debates. A two-day discussion commemorating the 150th anniversary of the National Song Vande Mataram saw participation from 82 Members, while a three-day debate on Election Reforms involved 57 Members. &ldquo;You have all positively responded to my call to spend every day, every hour, every minute, every second of our time in the House to strengthen our democracy by meaningful debates and discussions,&rdquo; the Chairman said.
Legislative business included the passage or return of eight Bills and adoption of a Statutory Resolution regarding the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Amendment Act, 2024, with 212 Members taking part. Private Members&rsquo; Business also remained active, with 59 Bills introduced and one Bill and one Resolution discussed by 22 Members.
Over the course of the session, the House met for approximately 92 hours, achieving a productivity rate of 121%. During this period, 58 Starred Questions, 208 Zero Hour submissions, and 87 Special Mentions were addressed. The Chairman also recognized the support of the Deputy Chairman, the Panel of Vice-Chairpersons, the Secretary-General and staff, as well as the media for their coverage.
Radhakrishnan, however, expressed concern over unruly conduct by some opposition Members in the previous day&rsquo;s sitting, citing shouting, displaying placards, and throwing papers in the well of the House. He urged Members to maintain decorum in future proceedings.
Concluding his remarks, he extended greetings to all Members and their families for Christmas, New Year, and upcoming harvest festivals, including Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Magh Bihu.
Simultaneously, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla concluded the ongoing session of the 18th Lok Sabha after 15 sittings. He highlighted the active participation of Members, productive debates, and legislative business, noting that the House achieved a productivity rate of 111%.&nbsp;
The Speaker also thanked Members for their cooperation and stressed that meaningful discussions are essential to strengthening India&rsquo;s parliamentary democracy.

Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan on Friday strongly disapproved of disruptions by Opposition members during the passage of the rural employment guarantee bill (G RAM G), terming the conduct "unbecoming of Members of Parliament", and urged them to introspect and refrain from such behaviour in future.
Radhakrishnan read out a synopsis of the legislative and other business transacted during the 15-day sitting of the Winter session before adjourning the proceedings sine die.
Adjourned sine die (Latin for &lsquo;without a day') means suspending a parliamentary session indefinitely, without setting a specific date to reconvene. It's used when legislative bodies end a session without naming a future date for reassembly.
The Winter session of Parliament started on December 1.
"Disruption created during yesterday's sitting by the Opposition Members by shouting slogans, displaying placards, disrupting the Minister replying to the discussion, tearing up papers and throwing them in the well of the House showed conduct unbecoming of Members of Parliament. I earnestly hope that Hon'ble Members would introspect and not repeat such unruly behaviour in future," he said.
The Rajya Sabha sat past midnight on Thursday to pass legislation that replaced the 20-year-old rural employment scheme -- the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA) -- by boosting the number of guaranteed workdays to 125, up from the current 100 days per household for unskilled manual labour.
Opposition MPs protested the dropping of the name of the Father of the Nation from the new legislation, Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission - Rural (Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission - Rural).
Other than that, the 269th Session of the Upper House was "highly productive", registering 121 per cent productivity with sittings spanning about 92 hours, he said.
Delivering his valedictory remarks, Radhakrishnan said the Winter Session was significant as it marked his first stint presiding over the House after assuming office. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of the House J P Nadda, and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge for their felicitations.
"The warmth and affection in your felicitations proved a source of great encouragement for me as I sat down discharging my constitutional responsibility as the Chairman of this august House," he said.
He said that in his first address, he sought the cooperation of members for the smooth functioning of the House. "I am happy that Hon&rsquo;ble Members cooperated with the Chair to complete a significant amount of Business during this Winter Session."
The Chairman noted that the House agreed to extend sittings or skip lunch recess on five days to transact business. He said the session recorded an unprecedented rise in Zero Hour activity, with an average of over 84 notices received daily -- a 31 per cent increase over the previous two sessions -- while matters actually raised averaged more than 15 per day, up nearly 50 per cent.
Highlighting the quality of deliberations, Radhakrishnan said the House held a two-day special discussion on the 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram, with 82 members participating. A three-day discussion on electoral reforms saw interventions from 57 members.
During the session, the Rajya Sabha passed or returned eight Bills and adopted a statutory resolution on the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Amendment Act, 2024, with participation from 212 members. As many as 59 Private Members' Bills were introduced, reflecting what he described as the "vibrancy of parliamentary democracy".
The Chairman also cited 58 starred questions, 208 Zero Hour submissions and 87 special mentions during the session, and said he issued a detailed ruling clarifying the scope of Rule 267.
Radhakrishnan thanked the Deputy Chairman, members of the panel of vice-chairpersons, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat and the media for their role in ensuring the smooth conduct of proceedings.

Lok Sabha concluded its 19-day Winter Session, passing key bills including MNREGA repeal, VB-G RAM G, SHANTI Bill, and insurance sector reforms amid opposition protests.

Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Friday, drawing curtains on the 19-day-long Winter Session of Parliament which saw the passage of crucial Bills, including one to repeal the 20-year-old MNREGA and another on opening up the civil nuclear sector for private participation.
As soon as the House met for the day, Speaker Om Birla read out his brief valedictory address, noting that the productivity of Lok Sabha during the session was registered at 111 per cent with members sitting till late hours to discuss crucial legislations.
He then adjourned the House sine die (for indefinite period), drawing curtains on the brief session that commenced on December 1.
When Birla was reading out his valedictory statement, some members were heard raising "Mahatma Gandhi ki jai" slogans.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present when the proceedings were adjourned.
During the 15 sittings of the Winter Session, the House took up two politically-charged debates -- on 150 years of Vande Matram and election reforms.
A debate listed on air pollution, which was to be initiated by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, could not take place.
The opposition had been insisting on a debate on the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter list in 12 states and UTs but the government made it clear that poll panel and its functioning cannot be discussed in the House, and agreed to hold a debate on election reforms instead.
The opposition, however, focussed its attack on SIR, the new law on appointment of chief election commissioner and election commissioners, and the alleged 'vote chori' carried out by the poll authority in connivance with the ruling BJP.
The Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) or VB-G RAM G Bill, assuring 125 days of guaranteed jobs for rural India, was passed amid opposition protests on Thursday, including tearing of papers.
The Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill, which seeks to open the tightly-controlled civil nuclear sector for private participation, was also passed during the session.
The Lok Sabha also passed a Bill to raise FDI in the insurance sector to 100 per cent from the current 74 per cent, which is expected to increase insurance penetration, lower premiums, and boost job creation.
The Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Bill, 2025, was cleared by the Rajya Sabha with a voice vote, a day after it was passed by the Lok Sabha.
The House also passed a Bill to repeal 65 Amendment Acts and six principal laws, which had lost relevance.
A Bill to set up a higher education regulator -- the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhisthan Bill, 2025 -- was referred to a joint committee of the two Houses.
The Bill seeks to establish an overarching higher education commission along with three councils for regulation, accreditation and ensuring academic standards for universities and higher education institutions in India.
Another Bill on the market securities code was introduced and referred to a department-related standing committee for further examination.
