Thane, Jul 1 (PTI) — In a significant bust, police in Thane have apprehended a man from Bihar in a narcotics operation that led to the confiscation of over 3 kilograms of charas valued at Rs 31 lakh, according to an official statement on Tuesday.

The seizure took place on Monday, June 30, in the Kopri area when the Crime Branch, acting on intelligence, executed a strategic trap, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarsingh Jadhav informed the media.

The operation began when senior police inspector Salil Bhosale from the Crime Branch's Wagle Unit received a credible tip-off regarding an impending drug transaction, Jadhav explained.

"The suspect was anticipated to appear outside a hotel to conduct a charas sale to his clientele. Our team effectively laid a trap and apprehended the suspect at the designated location," the DCP elaborated.

The individual taken into custody has been identified as Mohammad Aftab Alam Mohammad Salim Akhtar, aged 34, hailing from Chhapra in Bihar.

Jadhav disclosed that 3.096 kilograms of charas, carrying a market value of Rs 30,96,000, was confiscated from the suspect's possession.

In addition to the narcotics, authorities recovered cash, a mobile phone, and other valuables estimated to be worth Rs 11,500, raising the total value of the seizure to Rs 31,07,500, according to the DCP.

An offence has been filed against the accused at the Kopri police station under applicable sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
