Terror attack in Pahalgam claims one life, injures 6 tourists

A terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the life of one tourist and left six others injured.

The attack occurred in the upper meadows of Baisaran Valley, a remote area accessible only by foot or horseback. Security forces and medical teams have swiftly moved to the scene.

The gunmen, reportedly disguised in camouflage, carried out what appears to be a targeted attack.

This incident has shocked the Pahalgam region, renowned for its breathtaking forests, clear lakes, and expansive meadows, attracting countless tourists each year.

This attack comes amid the high tourist season in the region and coincides with the ongoing registration for this year's Amarnath Yatra. The 38-day pilgrimage, one of the holiest journeys for Hindus, commences on July 3.

Devotees embark on this spiritual trek via two routes: the 48-km Pahalgam path through Anantnag district and the shorter, yet steeper, 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district.

Recently, during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presided over a high-level security review meeting. He emphasized the need for the complete eradication of terrorism, particularly focusing on the Jammu division, and stressed a zero-tolerance stance on infiltration.

Condemning the attack, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti stated, "Such violence is unacceptable and must be denounced."

She called for a comprehensive investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable and to scrutinize any security lapses. "Historically, Kashmir has warmly welcomed tourists, making this rare incident deeply concerning. Ensuring visitor safety is paramount, and steps must be taken to prevent future attacks," she added.

As the investigation unfolds, questions about security measures in the region and the impact on the upcoming Amarnath Yatra loom large. Authorities are urged to reinforce safety protocols to protect both citizens and visitors in this sensitive region.
