Tension in Thane: Marathi Men Attacked, Heightened Security

Thane, Aug 6 (PTI): Tension gripped the area near Bhayander railway station in Thane district, Maharashtra, after two Marathi-speaking men were allegedly assaulted by some migrants. The altercation, which occurred on Tuesday evening, reportedly stemmed from a tender-related dispute within the railway premises, as informed by the Bhayander police station's senior inspector, Jitendra Kamble.

The police have detained one person linked to the incident and are actively pursuing the others involved. Security in the vicinity has been heightened, and authorities are urging the public to disregard any misleading content circulating online.

The attack sparked strong reactions from local groups. The Marathi Ekikaran Samiti, led by President Govardhan Deshmukh, condemned the assault, interpreting it as a targeted attack on Marathi locals. "Is this Bihar or Maharashtra?" Deshmukh queried, drawing a parallel to past incidents where political outcry followed attacks on migrants. He alleged that the assailants, migrants with criminal backgrounds, operated with impunity just a kilometer from the local police station.

The police are examining a viral video of the incident and have registered an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of attempted murder. Kamble assured, "No one involved in the attack will be spared. We are thoroughly investigating the matter."

Deshmukh further demanded the application of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against the accused, threatening to launch an intense agitation should the attackers elude capture.
