Telangana Cabinet Lifts Two-Child Rule for Local Elections

Hyderabad, Oct 17 (PTI): The Telangana Cabinet has decided to lift the existing rule that disqualifies candidates with more than two children from contesting in local body elections. This decision was announced during a media briefing following a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday. Revenue Minister P. Srinivas Reddy informed that the state government plans to organize 'Praja Palana–Praja Vijayotsavam' celebrations to mark the completion of two years under the Congress government, running from December 1 to 9.

The cabinet re-evaluated the necessity of the two-child policy for local body election candidates. Reddy explained that while population control measures are actively implemented, the government felt that the ban was no longer needed. Thus, the cabinet has, in principle, decided to lift this restriction.

The minister also highlighted the state's successful harvest, with a record production of 1.48 crore metric tonnes of paddy during the Kharif season. The government anticipates about 80 lakh tonnes of this to be procured at designated centres. Simultaneously, the state government announced its intent to establish three new Agricultural Colleges in Huzurnagar, Kodangal, and Nizamabad.

Efforts are being accelerated for the Hyderabad Metro Rail expansion, with a senior officials committee being appointed to study the feasibility of the government taking over the Phase-I Metro Rail project from L&T. In addition, the cabinet agreed to allocate seven more acres to NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad. The quota for local students (Telangana representation) in the university will be increased from 25 per cent to 50 per cent.
