Former Techie Arrested for Allegedly Driving Wife to Suicide

Bengaluru, Aug 29 (PTI) A former software employee who switched careers to sell panipuri has been arrested for allegedly driving his 27-year-old wife to suicide at their home in Suddaguntepalya, police reported.

According to police statements, the deceased, identified as Shilpa Panchangamath, was discovered dead on Tuesday night. Her mother, Sharada, has lodged a complaint claiming harassment related to dowry demands.

Shilpa was wed to Praveen, son of the late Shambulingaiah of Vaddarahatti village in Gangavati taluk, on December 5, 2022. The family reportedly spent around Rs 35 lakh on the wedding and gifted the groom 150 grams of gold.

Following their marriage, the couple resided in BTM Layout. Praveen, who had previously worked at Oracle in Whitefield, quit his job to start a panipuri business. The couple have a son.

The complaint highlights that Praveen and his mother, Shantavva, subjected Shilpa to mental and physical harassment, demanding Rs 5 lakh for his business. When the demands weren't met, Shilpa was allegedly assaulted and sent back to her parental home.

Sharada claims she eventually raised the requested amount and sent her daughter back, but the harassment persisted. About four months ago, a dispute reportedly erupted over plans for Shilpa’s baby shower.

On August 26, the family received news of Shilpa’s suicide. When they arrived at her residence, they found her unresponsive, covered with a sheet on the bed.

Praveen was arrested by police based on the complaint on Thursday. A detailed investigation is ongoing.
