Supreme Court Upholds Telangana's Domicile Rule for Medical Admissions

New Delhi, Sep 1 (PTI): The Supreme Court has affirmed the Telangana government's domicile rule, allowing admissions into state medical and dental colleges for students who have studied in the state for the last four years up to Class 12. The bench, led by Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran, approved the state’s appeal, upholding the 2017 Telangana Medical and Dental Colleges Admission Rules, amended in 2024. The rules stipulate that only students who have studied in Telangana for the specified duration can avail admissions under the state quota.

This decision overrules the Telangana High Court's earlier judgment, which stated that permanent residents could not be denied admission benefits merely for residing outside the state temporarily. The Supreme Court had reserved its verdict on August 5 concerning the pleas, including one from the Telangana government, challenging the High Court's order that annulled the domicile rule.

Representing the state were senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi and lawyer Sravan Kumar Karnam. A detailed judgment from the top court is still awaited.
