Flash Flood Leaves Over 100 Families Homeless in South Tripura

Agartala, July 9 (PTI) - Over 100 families have been left homeless after a flash flood inundated their homes in South Tripura district, according to officials on Wednesday.

In response, authorities have announced the closure of all schools and anganwadi centres in the district for the day as a precautionary measure.

The district administration has urged residents of low-lying areas to stay vigilant following the flash flood, which was triggered by relentless rainfall on Tuesday.

Floodwaters have caused the Muhuri River to rise above the danger level, which is set at 15.70 metres, flooding areas on both sides of its embankment.

"Due to continuous rainfall since Monday night, numerous low-lying areas in the Belonia and Santirbazar subdivisions have been submerged," South Tripura District Magistrate (DM) Muhammad Sajad informed PTI. "A total of 289 individuals from 118 families have sought refuge in 10 relief camps."

The Muhuri River's water level is currently at 15.70 metres, slightly above the danger threshold, although the intensity of rainfall has significantly reduced in recent hours, Sajad noted.

He urged people residing in vulnerable areas to remain on high alert for a potential evacuation if necessary.

"Disaster management teams and civil officials are poised to provide assistance, and the situation is under constant observation," Sajad stated.

In response to the flash flood, Sajad confirmed that all educational institutions and anganwadi centres will remain closed on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Manik Saha has expressed concern over the ongoing flood situation and directed authorities to implement all possible measures to support affected residents, he added.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'orange alert' (indicating preparedness) for South Tripura district, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall. Additionally, a 'yellow alert' (indicating awareness) has been issued for the Gomati and Sepahijala districts for Wednesday.
