South Calcutta Law College Expels Individuals Over Alleged Crime

Kolkata - In a decisive move, South Calcutta Law College has expelled three individuals implicated in the alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old student. Prime accused Monojit Mishra, who was serving as an ad-hoc faculty member, has been terminated alongside students Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee. They have been taken into police custody until July 1.

The college's governing body, led by Trinamool Congress MLA Ashok Kumar Deb, convened to make these decisions. "The services of Mishra are terminated, and the two students are expelled with immediate effect," Deb stated. Furthermore, the college's security agency will receive a showcause notice, reflecting the administration's commitment to address public outrage and enhance campus safety.

Mishra's brief tenure at the college, having begun only 45 days prior, ends amid controversy. He first joined the institution in 2013 but was rusticated that same year after a stabbing incident on Chetla Bridge. Despite eluding authorities then, he re-enrolled in 2017 and graduated in 2022. Known for his involvement with the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), Mishra wielded considerable influence on campus.

Allegations against him are not new. Titas Manna, a former student, recounted Mishra's involvement in a 2016 incident where outsiders allegedly vandalized college premises. Despite initial police action, the cases were mysteriously dropped. The unfolding events signify a critical juncture for the college in addressing accountability and reforming safety protocols.
