Kolkata Violence: 29 Arrested After Clashes in South 24 Parganas

Kolkata, June 12 (PTI): Police in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district have arrested 29 individuals following clashes between two groups. The violence erupted on Wednesday in Maheshtala under the jurisdiction of Rabindranagar Police Station but is now under control according to the Diamond Harbour Police district.

"Three cases have been registered in connection with the clashes and 29 people have been arrested so far," the police communicated via a social media post on X. The Rabindranagar Police Station area is now "completely under control", the statement added.

In an effort to maintain peace, authorities have implemented Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in the area.

The violence began over the establishment of a shop in Maheshtala, causing the area to descend into chaos.

The unrest on Wednesday led to widespread tension in the Rabindranagar area near Kolkata, resulting in injuries to several police personnel and damage to multiple vehicles. Heavy reinforcements were called in as the situation escalated, bringing political ramifications.

The police reported five injuries from the clashes. Meanwhile, the opposition BJP has called for the deployment of central forces in the troubled area, while the ruling TMC accused the BJP of politicizing what it termed a local issue.
