Attempted Smuggling: Man Arrested Outside Kerala Jail

Kannur, Aug 25 (PTI) A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle a mobile phone and beedi packets into the central jail in Kannur district of north Kerala. According to police reports on Monday, the accused, identified as Akshay K from Panankavu in Puthiyatheru, was intercepted by prison officials during the foiled attempt. Two accomplices managed to flee and are currently being tracked by law enforcement.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday when the accused trespassed into the jail compound and tried to fling a mobile phone, beedi packets, and other tobacco items over the compound wall. However, alert jail wardens noticed the activity and intercepted the group. While Akshay was caught, his associates escaped, according to the FIR.

Subsequently, prison officials handed Akshay over to the police, who then registered a case and formally arrested him as mentioned in the FIR. The accused faces charges under section 329(3) for criminal trespass under the relevant legal provisions, and section 86(1) of the Kerala Prisons and Correctional Services (Management) Act for attempting to bring prohibited items into the jail. Police sources state that Akshay has been released on bail following interrogation.

The search is on for the other two suspects, who have been identified, and they are expected to be apprehended soon. Authorities are also investigating the intended recipient of the contraband inside the jail.
