Sikkim Leads the Way in Combating Plastic Waste on Environment Day

Gangtok, Jun 5 (PTI) – On the occasion of World Environment Day, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang extended his greetings and reiterated Sikkim's dedication to combating plastic pollution on a global scale. He encouraged citizens to recommit to shielding the planet from the extensive threat posed by plastic waste.

"Sikkim transcends being just a state; it stands as a living laboratory for environmental stewardship and sustainable development," Tamang stated in a Facebook post. He emphasized, "Our state took the initiative to ban single-use plastics early and continues advocating eco-friendly alternatives backed by significant community support."

The Chief Minister further noted the designation of Khachoedpalri Lake as Sikkim’s first Ramsar site in February, marking a significant achievement. "This distinction serves as a reminder that every water body, forest, and mountain is a sacred trust that we must protect for future generations," he declared.

Tamang highlighted recent sightings of tigers and snow leopards via camera traps, along with frequent discoveries of new species of flora and fauna, underscoring the vibrant health of Sikkim’s ecosystems. He asserted that the state has proven development and ecology can coexist harmoniously.

"The Sikkim Model of Sustainable Development is garnering recognition both nationally and globally," the Chief Minister mentioned proudly. He concluded by urging collective action: "Together, let us unite to #BeatPlasticPollution, eradicate plastic waste, and safeguard the untouched beauty of Sikkim for future generations."
