Delhi HC to Hear Sharjeel Imam's Bail Plea on July 9 in Riot Case

The Delhi High Court will hear Sharjeel Imam's bail plea on July 9 regarding the February 2020 riots case. Imam's counsel argues no connection to the unrest, claiming he was not in Delhi post-January 15, 2020. Imam, charged under UAPA and IPC, was arrested in August 2020.

Delhi HC to Hear Sharjeel Imam's Bail Plea on July 9 in Riot Case

New Delhi, July 1 (PTI): The Delhi High Court is set to hear the bail application of activist Sharjeel Imam on July 9 in connection with the riots case from February 2020. A bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur was initially supposed to address the plea on Tuesday, but the session was postponed after the prosecution requested more time. Imam's counsel has previously stated in court that he had no connection with the location, timeframe, or his co-accused, including Umar Khalid. According to his lawyer, neither Imam's speeches nor his WhatsApp communications incited any unrest. The bail plea emphasizes that Imam was not even in the capital after January 15, 2020. He was arrested from his hometown in Bihar on January 28, 2020, concerning a different case. The plea argues that Imam did not participate in any 'conspiratorial' meetings with others. Imam, Khalid, and several others are charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and various sections of the IPC, accused of being the 'masterminds' behind the February 2020 riots. The violence, which erupted during anti-CAA and NRC protests, led to 53 deaths and injured over 700 people. Imam was subsequently arrested in this particular case on August 25, 2020.
