Heavy rains cause severe flooding in Telangana's Kamareddy district

Hyderabad, Aug 28 (PTI): Intense rainfall led to severe flooding in several low-lying areas and agricultural fields in Kamareddy district of Telangana on Thursday.

Widespread heavy rains since Wednesday morning caused rivulets and other water bodies to overflow in Kamareddy, Medak, and surrounding districts, disrupting road connectivity between various villages.

An official statement announced that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy would be conducting an aerial survey of the worst-affected districts on Thursday.

The Indian Army has been actively involved in relief efforts, which include the evacuation of citizens, distribution of relief materials, and relocating families to safer locations in Medak district. For these operations, the Army is utilizing specialized boats, necessary equipment, and skilled troops.

In a post on ‘X’, the Indian Army Southern Command stated, "Indian Army Flood Relief Columns were swiftly launched and are undertaking comprehensive Flood Relief operations in close coordination with Civil Administration, #NDRF and #SDRF." Additionally, it was mentioned that Engineering Task Forces (ETF) are working on clearing obstacles and restoring connectivity, while medical teams are providing urgent care to the affected individuals.

In its commitment, the Army added, "#IndianArmy remains committed to bringing relief & reassurance to affected communities."

State Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao held a teleconference with officials from Medak, Kamareddy, Nizamabad, Nirmal, and other districts late on Wednesday. According to an official release, the Chief Secretary noted that the timely measures taken by the government minimized the impact on daily life.

He urged officials to remain vigilant in anticipation of more heavy rains on Thursday. Furthermore, he mentioned that the government would deploy State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and NDRF teams to Kamareddy and Nirmal districts.

State Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy highlighted that the 103-year-old Pocharam project in Kamareddy district, constructed during the Nizam regime, withstood a significant inflow of 1.82 lakh cusecs.

The South Central Railway (SCR), headquartered in Secunderabad, cancelled four trains due to tracks being submerged by overflowing water in the Gajwel-Lakdaram section under its Hyderabad Division following the heavy rains, SCR confirmed in a statement late on Wednesday.

The Meteorological Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall in isolated places on Thursday across Adilabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanumakonda, and other districts.

Tragically, the torrential rains claimed a life when a house wall collapsed in Kamareddy district on Wednesday, while another individual went missing.

Kamareddy was severely affected, with Argonda receiving 418.3 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am to 9 pm on Wednesday, followed by 302.5 mm in Akkapur, Nirmal district.

To ensure safety, officials relocated over 500 residents to secure locations in Kamareddy district on Wednesday, and food arrangements were made for about 1,000 people.
