Setback for Bhopal gas tragedy victims: SC rejects govt plea for higher compensation

Over 38 years after the Bhopal gas tragedy, the Supreme Court dealt a setback to the victims by rejecting the Union government's petition.

The top court on 14 March 2023 rejected the government's curative petition for higher compensation of ₹7,844 crore from the successor firms of Union Carbide Corporation.

A 5-judge bench said that there was no rationale for the Centre to rake up the issue two decades after the settlement.

In December 1984, a toxic gas leak killed over 3,000 people and affected more than 1 lakh others.
