Four Laborers Die from Asphyxiation in Odisha's Nabarangpur

Bhubaneswar, Jun 3 (PTI) – Tragedy struck in Odisha's Nabarangpur district when four laborers, mostly sanitation workers, allegedly succumbed to asphyxiation while cleaning a septic tank on Tuesday, according to police reports. The unfortunate incident occurred in Padalguda village, situated under the Nandahandi block within the jurisdiction of the Nabarangpur Town Police station.

According to fire brigade personnel, the ordeal began when two individuals initially descended into the septic tank and failed to respond after a while. Subsequently, another man entered the tank, only to experience the same fate of non-responsiveness. Finally, a fourth individual attempted to rescue the others, but he too became critically ill.

Emergency responders eventually extracted all four individuals from the septic tank and rushed them to the District Headquarters Hospital in Nabarangpur. Unfortunately, two of them were declared dead upon arrival. Tragically, the other two also succumbed later, as confirmed by police authorities.

The victims have been identified as Amir Khura, Trilochan Bhatra, Lalu Rana, and M Santu, all aged between 25 to 35 years.

The precise cause of death will be determined following the autopsy, according to the police. A case has been registered at the Nabarangpur Town Police Station under section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which pertains to causing death by negligence.
