New Delhi, July 16 (PTI): On Wednesday, the Supreme Court sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh government regarding a plea challenging certain provisions of the recently amended 2024 Uttar Pradesh law on unlawful religious conversion.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued a notice to the state, asking for their response.

The plea has been tagged for hearing alongside other similar petitions.

The Supreme Court was considering a plea filed by Roop Rekha Verma, an academician from Lucknow, along with others, challenging the amended law.

The petitioners argued that certain provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, amended in 2024, were "vague and overly broad" and claimed that the ambiguity infringed on free speech and the right to religious propagation.
