Govt Renames NIPCCD to Honour Savitribai Phule

New Delhi, Jul 2 (PTI) The government has demonstrated its ongoing commitment to women and children by renaming the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) as the Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development, according to Union minister Annapurna Devi. The name change was officially implemented on June 19, as noted in a gazette notification issued earlier this week and is in alignment with sections 12 and 12A of the Societies Registration Act, 1860.

In a bid to decentralise capacity-building initiatives, the Women and Child Development Minister announced the unveiling of a new regional centre in Ranchi, which is set to open on Friday. This new centre is aimed at bolstering grassroots efforts by providing local frontline workers with enhanced training and support.

Minister Devi expressed that the Ranchi centre will serve the eastern states of Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal, which together have over seven lakh personnel working under key schemes like Mission Shakti, Mission Vatsalya, and Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0. Previously, these regions relied on centres located in Guwahati and Lucknow, necessitating extensive travel for training.

Apart from its training function, the Ranchi centre will offer an advanced diploma in child guidance and counselling, acting as a focal point for research, training, and outreach activities tailored to child development, adolescent mental health, and women's empowerment. This facility will enable more specific interventions and resource allocation strategies catered to regional needs.

The newly named Savitribai Phule National Institute operates other regional centres in Bengaluru, Guwahati, Lucknow, Indore, and Mohali, continuing to lead as the primary organization for research, documentation, and capacity building in the field of women and child development. The renaming is also a tribute to Savitribai Phule, a pioneering 19th-century social reformer, educator, and advocate for women's rights in India.
