Samik Bhattacharya Set to Become West Bengal BJP President

Samik Bhattacharya is set to be the next West Bengal BJP president, running unopposed. He filed his nomination at the BJP office on Wednesday, with outgoing president Sukanta Majumdar and Suvendu Adhikari's support, part of BJP's strategy before the 2026 elections.

Samik Bhattacharya Set to Become West Bengal BJP President

Kolkata, July 2 (PTI) Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Samik Bhattacharya, is poised to become the next president of the West Bengal BJP. No other candidates filed nominations for the post by Wednesday's deadline, according to party leaders.

In the afternoon, Bhattacharya arrived at the BJP's Salt Lake office, where he was accompanied by the outgoing state president, Sukanta Majumdar, and the Leader of the Opposition in the assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, to submit his nomination papers.

The party had set the nomination window between 2 pm and 4 pm, with scrutiny and withdrawal of papers allowed until 6 pm. As Bhattacharya was the sole candidate, he is likely to be elected unopposed, a senior party figure remarked.

"Up until 4 pm, only Samik Bhattacharya submitted his nomination papers for the state president's position. An announcement of his election is expected either this evening or during a felicitation event tomorrow," stated a state BJP leader. The announcement is anticipated to occur during a ceremony at Science City, Kolkata.

The election process for the new state BJP president commenced on Wednesday, a day following the official schedule announcement. With the 2026 Assembly elections not too distant, the BJP is preparing for an organizational revamp, with Bhattacharya's selection seen as a part of this broader strategy. Unless disqualified during scrutiny or an unexpected candidate submits a nomination, Bhattacharya is set to succeed Sukanta Majumdar as the state party chief.
