Rs 30 Lakh Compensation for Vrindavan Sewer Tragedy Victims

Mathura (UP), June 24 (PTI) - The families of two sanitation workers who died tragically after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a sewer tank in Vrindavan will receive compensation of Rs 30 lakh each, in accordance with the minimum amount mandated by the Supreme Court. This announcement was made by a local municipal commissioner.

The unfortunate incident took place on a Saturday evening in the Keshav Dham area. The victims, identified as Narendra, aged 38, and Chhotelal, aged 40, were tasked with cleaning a sewer tank at a private guesthouse. It is reported that contractor Amit had hired them at the behest of the guesthouse manager, Hemant.

Officials stated that despite the potential risk of encountering poisonous gas, necessary safety protocols were neglected, leading to the tragic deaths of the two workers.

Though Narendra and Chhotelal were not employees of the municipal corporation, the commissioner highlighted the heartfelt appeals made by their families and various organizations, who had initially demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore for each victim. In response, steps are being taken to provide Rs 30 lakh each as ex gratia assistance.

Moreover, the commissioner reported that the police have arrested the guesthouse manager and the contractor on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.
