Robotic Knee Surgery Revolutionizes Recovery for Jharkhand Man

A man from Jharkhand underwent a novel robot-assisted knee replacement surgery in Delhi, achieving quick recovery post-operation. This global first in robotic joint replacement by Max Hospital highlights medical advancements in joint stability and patient recovery.

Robotic Knee Surgery Revolutionizes Recovery for Jharkhand Man

New Delhi, July 2 (PTI) — A 54-year-old man from Jharkhand named Brij Kishor, who had endured severe knee pain for the past eight years, recently underwent a robot-assisted, cementless medial pivot total knee replacement surgery in Delhi and remarkably took his first steps later that same day.

Kishor, hailing from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, suffered from chronic knee pain and progressive joint damage for more than eight years. During this difficult period, he consulted with local doctors, experimented with homoeopathic treatments, and even traveled to Kolkata seeking medical advice. Ultimately, he decided to come to Delhi for further treatment, as he shared with PTI.

His surgery took place on June 23 at Max Super Speciality Hospital located in Saket. As per a statement from the hospital, Kishor was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis affecting both knees and a range of complex deformities, including varus (bow-legged) and flexion (bent-knee) contractures. His condition had severely limited his ability to walk without assistance.

Dr. Sujoy Bhattacharjee, Chairman at Max Institute of Robotic Joint Replacement, spearheaded the surgery using advanced robotic technology known as the CUVIS robotic system. A cementless medial pivot cruciate-retaining (CR) implant was employed to facilitate Kishor's recovery and restore his mobility.

This implant is designed to encourage natural bone growth around it, thereby eliminating the need for conventional cement and providing improved integration, enhanced joint stability, and better long-term outcomes, explained Dr. Bhattacharjee.

Dr. Bhattacharjee claimed, "This is a global first in robotic joint replacement. The robot-enabled precision combined with the use of a cementless implant allows for quicker recovery and a more natural feeling joint for the patient."

Regarding the patient's recovery, Dr. Bhattacharjee noted, "Prior to surgery, Kishor could barely walk. However, on the very day of the operation, he managed to walk with assistance. Within just a few days, he was independently walking with newfound confidence."
